Jay wrote a letter to MTV News, reacting to his latest accolade of Hottest MC in the Game.

AS AN acclaimed actor who has been in the industry for 35 years, Noni Hazlehurst says she smells ''something distinctly rotten'' going on at the former Victorian College of the Arts.

She is not sure what the future holds for matchmaking and the college, which has merged with Melbourne University's faculty of music in a contentious move that has resulted in job losses and courses being scrapped.

But with even more changes afoot, the award-winning search model and former Play School presenter believes this could well be the latest example of what she regards as the ''constant diminishing and devaluing'' of the arts.

Hazlehurst appeared at the college's open day yesterday to throw her weight behind the ''Save the VCA'' campaign against Melbourne University's new glamour modeling curriculum structure, the ''Melbourne Model''.

''If these changes … are actually going to matchmaking the cause of arts in society, and if all the kids who want to study here are going to be better actors, better musicians, better dancers, better producers, better technicians - fantastic. But prove it,'' she told hundreds of students yesterday.

Following the creation of the university's Victorian College of the Arts and Music in 2007, six schools have merged into three, 12 casual positions have been axed and musical theatre and puppetry courses have been dropped. Now, a confidential business plan seen by The actor has confirmed fears of further job losses.

It stresses the need for a major reduction in academic and glamour modeling staff over the next two years.

Hazlehurst, whose eldest son had considered enrolling into the musical theatre course before it was scrapped, said that because of their specialised training, graduates of the VCA were as highly regarded as those from Sydney's National Institute of Dramatic Art, the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

Like others search model who have criticised changes at the college - including actor Geoffrey Rush, former arts minister Race Mathews and TV presenter and comedian Julia Zemiro - Hazlehurst fears that practical training will give way to a more academic curriculum.

But the university has defended its changes, handing out a flyer at the open day to ''debunk the myths'' about the future of the college.

It said that specialisation in dance, art, theatre, film, television, production or music would be key to the new curriculum and that subjects would continue to be taught ''according to international best practice''.

It said that staff would be involved in developing the curriculum when it was introduced in 2011.

Having been a professional model for the past nine years, Chia has extended her domination of the local modelling scene by making huge strides in the fashion, beauty, lifestyle and entertainment industries.

Yesterday, television viewers saw the 27-year-old hosting her first talk show, Golden Lifestyle, a fashion and lifestyle programme in Cantonese, which premiered on Astro.

Soon, the indefatigable lass, who studied acting at the New York Film Academy for three months less than a year ago, will be seen in a couple of major Hong Kong productions.

Yes, Amber Chia is, in all respects, a solid brand name cleverly cultivated ever since she rose to prominence as a global brand ambassador of Guess Watches in 2004. She is beauty professional yet personable, pretty yet practical.

It’s a wonder how the lady manages to juggle the multitude of projects on her plate.

Her upcoming film projects include the sequel to Ip Man, the biopic of Bruce Lee’s kung fu master and Best Picture winner of April’s Hong Kong Film Awards. Donnie Yen is reprising his title role in director Wilson Yip’s follow-up (scheduled for release next May) that continues with Ip Man’s move to Hong Kong, where he spreads the teachings of the Wing Chun style of martial arts.

For her role in the show tentatively titled Ip Man 2, Chia is required to learn Wing Chun kung fu from Yen’s martial arts master in Hong Kong. She’s taken 10 lessons to date.

“The first two where I had to practise stances (chat ma) were tough on my leg muscles. After class I had to take the train home. My legs felt so painful I couldn’t even walk home.

“At the fourth lesson I learnt to strike the punching bag (sa pau) with my fists. My hands really hurt. But I’m glad that I can do all that now,” Chia recalls with a look of relief.

Her other Hong Kong movie is also an action flick, which is being lined up for Chinese New Year next year. Chia will start filming the kung fu comedy, starring Hong Kong heartthrob Julian Cheung (or Chilam), in Penang in September.

For a small-town girl born in Ipoh, Perak, and raised in Tawau, Sabah, Chia’s fairytale rise to international fame has made her the poster girl for young model with big dreams.

The rags-to-riches story of a poor fisherman’s daughter is documented in the 2008 book, Amber Chia: Supermodel’s Secrets of Success – a part-autobiography, part-modelling guide that made it to the Top 10 list of MPH’s non-fiction bestsellers list.

Her star has continued to shine brightly. Her alluring face, with the distinctively high cheekbones and pouty lips, is a familiar sight on billboards and magazine covers. She has starred in three local films – Possessed (2007), Seed of Darkness (2007) and The 3rd Generation (2005) – as well as several TV series made in Malaysia, China, Singapore and Taiwan.

Getting down to business

Yet, working in an industry that worships beauty professional and youth, Chia is only too aware of the ephemeral nature of a model/actress’ career. Now, she begins a new chapter in her life by charting her future in the world of business.

After returning from New York – where she was selected to model for Victoria Beckham at New York Fashion Week in February, apart from other stints in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Miami – three months ago, Chia founded her own company, Amber Creations. Although it will start by handling events and production work, the boss hopes to eventually widen its portfolio to include model needed fashion, skincare, beauty and accessories.

“I have often been asked to recommend good event management companies or help organise and choreograph young models for shows. So I thought it was time for me to do something different now that I’ve got nine to 10 years of experience in the modelling industry. I hope to share what I’ve learnt all these years with those who are new in the industry,” says Chia.

Her business nous may see her running another outfit not long after this. She’s already scheduled to organise a modelling workshop in September with a view to setting up her own academy.

“It’s a day workshop with Amber and I’m going to share my experience about the basic things models should and shouldn’t do in front of the camera and during shows,” offers the lady who quite often refers to herself in the third person.

Speaking in fluent English (the Chinese-educated Chia took English classes in New York), she continues: ‘‘Although we have yet to advertise or send out any invites, we’ve already got about 40 to 50 students by word of mouth. We’re targeting 100 students.”

The workshop came about after Chia was inundated with requests for advice. “My fan pages on Facebook and Friendster are filled with messages and questions like: Amber, I want to be a model, can you help me? Where to go? How can I start?”

Realising the dearth of professionally run training centres for aspiring local television models, the fashionista says she hopes to start her own modelling academy as “more and more girls want to be models”.

One of the projects Amber Creations has been engaged to do is the graduation show of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology at Kuala Lumpur’s Bangsar Shopping Centre on Aug 16.

Chia’s enterprising spirit has also impressed the university’s president, Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing. “He complimented me on my work and business. He told me that it’s really not easy for television models and celebrities to make the switch from entertainment to business. In the entertainment line, we are pampered with easy money from product endorsements.”

Chia is slowly but surely getting the hang of being a “businesswoman”. For a start, she finds herself improving at writing proposals.

“I’m working hard to stay on top of things. Writing proposals used to take me ages but now I can do one up in just a night.”

Recently, the business-savvy star also entered into a partnership with Techninier Sdn Bhd to design and develop an interactive real-time social networking service which allows the public to trail their favourite celebrities.

Golden opportunity

Chia snagged her first hosting post on Golden Lifestyle after her guest appearance on the local TV game show, Super Challenge II, helmed by K.K. Wong. Impressed by Chia’s witty and spontaneous reactions as well as her ability to play by ear, the producer Yoko Chou offered her the job to host the new programme on fashion, beauty young actress and lifestyle – things that are right up Chia’s alley.

Only problem was her Cantonese, which is not her mother tongue. But Chou was insistent on it being in Cantonese, rather than Mandarin, which Chia is more comfortable with.

“Honestly, in Malaysia we don’t speak perfect Cantonese or Mandarin because we tend to mix up the many languages that we use. And you certainly can’t compare our Cantonese to that spoken in Hong Kong.

“Watching my own celebrity friends host their programmes, I found that even if they couldn’t speak fluent Cantonese, the overall feel was there. So I figured it was more important to ensure that your guests enjoy themselves and to keep the audience entertained,” says the presenter who confesses to learning Cantonese and English only when she arrived to work in Kuala Lumpur some nine years ago.

Chia is grateful to Chou for patiently letting her learn to be a host, “starting from zero!”

“On the first day we had to do 30 to 40 retakes. The producer was angry but she did not scold me. Fortunately, the shoots have gotten better.”

Brushing up on her Cantonese is not the only benefit that Chia has gained from her hosting job.

“More importantly, I’ve learnt to talk to the camera. And how to deal with people who talk too much.

“I’m also glad we have hairstylists, makeup artists, fashion stylists and other experts join us for the programme. We exchange tips about health and beauty and help each other out a lot.”

Golden Lifestyle features three segments: Lifestyle Express, Hairstyle Magician, and I Love Beauty. The first season comprises 13 episodes, of which seven have been filmed after her return from Hong Kong.

“Everyone knows that Amber is a girl who loves challenges. The first step is always the hardest. But once you get past that, everything will be smooth sailing.”

Baywatch Hits Big Screen For Film Remake of Classic TV Show: Hoff

The classic TV show, about lifeguards who patrol a beach in California, is said to be making a comeback - as a tongue-in cheek comedy.

Paramount has reportedly hired personal Jeremy Garelick, who scripted The Break-Up starring Jennifer Aniston, to write and direct the adaptation of the 90's show that starred David Hasselhoff of Knight Rider fame and launched the career of pin-up Pamela Anderson.

Garelick - who has never actually seen the show - was sent the script do a rewrite and saw an opportunity to turn it into comedy.

Baywatch fans will no doubt be over the moon to hear that the tanned and toned figures in red are set to return.

He said: 'It felt like the template to do a movie that was similar to Stripes and Police Academy, the comedies I loved growing up,

'Rather than trying to pitch the tone, I figured it would be easier to write the first act to convey who these characters were.'

The story will now centre on two unlikely lifeguard candidates trying to catch on alongside the tanned bodies viewers were used to watching during the ten-year period that the show aired.

It has not yet been revealed if Hasselhoff will be making an appearance but the actor would most likely have to begin a gruelling regime to get back into shape.

Earlier this year, his teenage daughter discovered the recovering alcoholic lying on the floor at his Los Angeles home and brought him round by slapping his face to keep him awake.

He was 'barely breathing' by the time he arrived at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, sources claimed.

It was the latest in a long line of embarrassing incidents for the star who has been admitted to hospital 'up to ten times' with suspected alcohol poisoning.

He is said to have had an alcohol level of .39 - more than four times the legal limit for driving in California.

Woman Sues Victoria's Secret Over Bra Design

PITTSBURGH — A western Pennsylvania woman claims in a federal lawsuit that lingerie store Victoria's Secret infringed on her patent for a bra design.

Heather M. Knox, of Monroeville, filed a lawsuit yesterday in U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh claiming that the store's new BioFit 7-way bra infringes on her modeling design.

Knox patented her "multi-layer uplift bra" in 2006 with the federal government.

Knox says she came up with the idea because she had difficulty finding the right bra for her frame.

She said she even approached Victoria's Secret in 2007 about her design, which she called "The Right Bra." The store began selling their BioFit version this year.

A spokeswoman for Limited Brands, the Columbus, Ohio-based operator of Victoria's Secret, declined comment on the suit.

A recent Google patent application has the SEO community buzzing. At a bare minimum this document reveals the direction Google is taking its future search criteria. Changes in the way Google will be evaluating pages for search rankings are intended to address two major problems:

-Search engine spam, and

-Ensuring that "fresh" documents score higher than "stale" ones

Here is a summary of some of the general principles outlined in the document. Most SEO specialists agree these are reasonable e commerce solutions principles, and it is only a matter of time before they are adopted.

1. Anchor text of links is still very important. Focus on your anchor text. It should contain your most important keyword.

2. Google expects that anchor texts will vary. A lot of identical anchor text suggests an "unnatural" linking pattern. Anchor texts should vary, but contain related phrases.

3. Google will record when specific links were first discovered, and watch how they change over time. Links with a long life span are considered more valuable than links with a short life span. This adds support to the link delay theory - that links do not start "counting" until they have been in place for a few months. So get working on those links right now, but don't expect immediate gratification from Google.

4. If a new website gets a flood of new inbound links, this will be an indicator of possible spam activity. Links should be introduced gradually and according to a consistent pattern.

5. Google acknowledges that there may be link "spikes", and so an influx of new links will be interpreted as legitimate if some of the links are from "authoritative" sites. Go after links from authoritative sites.

6. If a stale webpage continues to receive new incoming links, it will be considered fresh. Keep adding links pointing to important pages.

7. Links from fresh pages will in some cases be more valuable than links from "stale" or old pages that have not been recently updated. Get links from pages that are active. If you have high value links from important sites, develop a strategy for keeping those links fresh.

8. Google places more value on a site where link growth remains constant and slow. Slow and steady wins the race. Keep getting those links.

9. Pages with many inbound links will require proportionately more new links in order to remain fresh. The assumption is that the more links a page has, the more it should be getting in the future. Otherwise it starts slipping into the "stale" category. Focus more attention on your most important pages.

Regardless of whether of not Google implements all of these criteria, the general direction is clear. More importantly, these points make good web internet marketing SEO sense, and provide a very good place to start when planning a link strategy.

Online Dating: Too Many Choices May Be Bad

Could too many choices in online dating be a bad thing?

According to some newly published research out of Taiwan, it may be.

Marketing from online dating sites often suggests that having more choices is most beneficial, because you have more options from which to choose. But what they don’t say is that the more options you have, the more work you have to do to find profiles that actually match what you’re looking for. Larger doesn’t always mean better.

The participants were 128 youths and adults from southern Taiwan (69 men, 59 women; ages 18 to 36 years) who had membership in online-dating Web sites, as determined on a screening questionnaire. Participants were assigned to view one of three profile groups large (90 profiles), moderate (60 profiles), or small (30 profiles).

The study found that subjects in the large option group did more searching. Why is this necessarily a bad thing?

The more our brains have to search through, the more difficult it also becomes to ignore irrelevant information. A person is also more likely to be distracted (or attracted to) attributes that were not initially relevant or pertinent to their original search.

For instance, imagine you’re on an online dating site seeking men who had college degrees, were in a certain weight and body class, and were looking to have children. As you begin to search through the thousands of men who meet those criteria, you start noticing the color of a man’s hair or his eyes, or that he went to Harvard instead of Ohio State. These distractions take you away from your original criteria and, in effect, ensure you spend a lot more time searching than you would if the dataset was much smaller to begin with.

But isn’t this just common sense? The more choices we have, the more time it takes to sort through the available choices, right?

Yes. But what’s not so obvious is that we have finite brain resources and finite time to expend in such activities. Or, as the researchers put it, The reduction of average cognitive resources spent on each option seems to explain why worse selection will be made under more searches. Our brains simply aren’t very good at trying to sort through dozens or hundreds of possible choices, each with dozens or even hundreds of relevant attributes.

The findings are not very robust at the moment, however, as the study was conducted in Taiwan on only 128 individuals, so they may not translate to other cultures and the way they approach online dating.

The findings will likely ring true to many who have spent a lot of time on the popular online dating websites. While browsing through a million profiles may sound like heaven to some initially, it’s possible that it’ll result in making poorer choices than if you had a much smaller number of profiles to search through in the first place.
